A few more acts to buff up the best billing since 50BC …

newspost2

Oi Oi! It’s your lovable farm crew and we’re here to offer you some solace in this time of political madness.

Yes, on top of our already FIRE line up we’ve got a few extra treats to keep you burning. Blues rock slayers Wille and the Bandits return to the fields – “Edwards’ powerfully ranging voice can come carrying either a sledgehammer or a spoonful of honey.” (theupcoming)  – whilst Estrons bring their ferocious indie sound to The Orchard Stage. We’ve snagged cult hero Peter Bruntnell, credited as “one of the finest songwriters in Britain” (The Independent), and multi-instrumentalist Jaz DeLorean will wow audiences with his piano, accordion and trombone. Echo Town will get down with their djembe, didgeridoo and harmonica whilst The White Feather Collective smash through high-energy performances and the Smokin’ Durrys have got raw dynamism to fuel the heady Noz audience.

Brighton favourites Normanton Street bring their lyrically-focussed warm bass grooves to the Garden Stage, whilst The Lasting Days energise audiences with their infectious performances of American-influenced indie rock. The Bandstand presents Kudu Blue‘s combination of electrifying female vocals and experimental electronica. Further acts announced include Towers, Jaghana, Ed Crowley and The Man Who Painted Boats.

For all you insomniac, night-time fiends we’ve garnished our electronica feast with Natty Speaks, the irrepressible hip hop entertainer – versatile, gifted and outspoken. Audio-visual prodigy DJ Cheeba has quickly made a name for himself with his ingenious live video projections, and promises to provide some sensory delight in the Garden. New for 2016 we’re keeping the good vibes flowing through the night at the Orchard Bar with resident DJ Dex, celebrating his 15th year at the festival by busting out the after hours party tunes! Dex is the Noz crew’s party DJ of choice so expect funk, soul and disco, ‘80s & ‘90s, obscure covers and remixes, festival anthems and all sorts in between as he plays extended sets on both Friday and Saturday nights.

Over in The Dingle Velveteen Valley have announced the cream of the cheekiest burlesque talent including Indira Skyflower and Doe Demure whilst at The Bantam of The Opera we have a plethora of poetry, comedy and song from the likes of Jiggery Spokery and Tinderbox Creations alongside some thought provoking dramatic pieces including the amazing Vagina Monologues making a welcome Nozstock debut. If belly laughs are what you’re looking for than Laughing Stock is the place for you – we’ve added Bob Slayer, Tom Parry and Ben Target to the bill. For those who like their entertainment wonderfully weird then be sure to visit our PsychonautsThis team of professional psycho-surgeons will be administering an audio visual assault of delirium and delights for those in need of a little light relief.

The good news just keeps on coming, ey?

Noz – How should one festival?

Things to bring

  • Your favourite people
  • Not your best shoes – farms can be a muddy affair.
  • Socks – to keep your wellies company.
  • Decorations! To adorn both yourself and your tent.
  • A portable phone charger – unlike your festival spirit, your phone will die.
  • A money belt – to store hopes, dreams and gifts from strangers
  • Gaffa Tape- if gaffa can’t fix it, nothing can
  • Extra tent pegs.
  • Clothes that make your festi-loo experience a seamless operation (jumpsuits are quite the challenge…)
  • A light jacket – the perfect accessory to your most elaborate costume.
  • Dry shampoo (smells so good)
  • Lip balm
  • Mouthwash
  • Wet wipes – the efficient cousin of the shower.
  • A basic first aid kit for any minor mishaps that may occur.

Choose the right camping spot

All camping areas at Nozstock are full of fantastic folk, but finding your ideal site will mean you have a truly pitchin’ time. There is family camping if you’re bringing the little nozzers along and some areas closer to the main site for those who enjoy partaking in some fine Herefordshire Scrumpy after hours.

Respect the farm – keep it clean and green.

The last thing you want to wake up to is an unsightly site. Fill up the bin bag and recycling bag that you’ll be given when you arrive at the farm and hand it into the office (psst…you can even win tickets for next year’s festival when you do this!).

Be Noz to each other

Festivals are a treasure trove of excellent humans so treat everyone with kindness and care. Create community with your campsite neighbours and maybe you’ll meet some new compadres.

Noz-so-secrets of the Hidden Valley

At least once during the weekend, go and sit on the hill in the far field (near the carpark) and watch the sun rise – a crew favourite!

Compete to be wordsmith of the year in NozSlam!

NozSlam 2016

NozSlam!

Nozstock’s very own poetic pugilism platform is entering its third year of existence and we want YOU to join the host of awesome amateurs, poetic professionals and (even!) national champions that have graced our ears, eyes and stage over the past two years by submitting for “NOZSLAM 2016!”

In case you’ve somehow missed out the last two times round, let us break it down for you: slam is performance poetry, but with a playful competitive edge.  Poems can be funny, sad, angry, happy, political, topical, rhythmic, lyrical, dressed up in sparkly spandex leggings doing stag leaps across a pond of peanut butter… whatever it is that tickles your cerebrum, just so long as it is tickled in less than three and a half minutes! Each performance gets scored out of 10 by our five judges, the highest and lowest scores are dropped, the results are tabulated, totted up and the top scorer takes home the trophy!

If you’d like to throw your metaphorical hat in the ring, then all you need to do is make a little video of you performing your poem, and send it to nozslam@gmail.com along with your name and a description of up to 50 words to be featured alongside it by 30TH MAY!

We’ll upload all the submitted poems to the NozStock YouTube channel on 3RD JUNE where they’ll remain for the public’s viewing and VOTING pleasure until 17TH JUNE. The ten videos that receive the most YouTube ‘likes’ will be short-listed, and then it’s up to the whole NozStock team to discuss, disagree, debate, and eventually somehow decide on the five slammers (ANNOUNCED 27TH JUNE) who’ll receive FREE tickets to come and compete in the live Sunday final at this year’s NozStock Festival!

The winner of our main event slam will receive a whole host of NozStock goodies, heaps of adoration and, most importantly, a coveted spot in the Tent Of Temporary Thought line-up next year!

So whether you’ve always felt there was a poem burning in you that you’ve just gotta get out, or you’ve been doing this spoken word lark forever, it’s time to sharpen your pencil, limber up your larynx and show the world why you deserve to be NozSlam Champion 2016!

Rik & Matt

Tent Of Temporary Thought Stage Managers

P.S. If you’re stuck for inspiration or just want to see more of this slamming stupendousness – then head on over to www.youtube.com/NozstockFestival and check out entries from the last couple of years!

Ahead of Noz 2016 we caught up with Alana Hepburn to find out what makes her tick during festival season. Keeping proceedings running smoothly on the Garden Stage is Alana’s forte!

What’s your number 1 festival survival tip?

Bring a hot water bottle for your tent at night – extra heat for the colder nights.

Tell us a funny festival story.

Once we had a stage invasion during Sicknote, there was about 40 people on the stage – shouting Death to unemployment! it was pretty crazy!

Have you ever been star-struck?

Not so much starstruck but was very thrilled to have meet and worked with Craig Charles for his funk and soul club performance on the garden stage.

What is it that you love about festivals?

The atmosphere, people, environment – Everything!

Got some Nozstalgia for us?

Anytime I leave my house I pass a farm in my hometown, it makes me think of Bromyard – Rowden Paddocks every time.

Describe yourself in three words (when you are in festival-mode!)…

Enthusiastic. Determined. Helpful.

Tell us about your best festival moment.

Every moment at Noz is my best moment!

Who would be your ultimate-beyond-ultimate dream headliner at Nozstock?

Jurassic 5 – This year will be amazing! I have worked with Jurassic 5 several times before and I know they will be fantastic.

Do you have any pet peeves at festivals!?

People who pee all over the porta- toilets seats

When you’re not making Nozstock happen, what are you doing?

Running events, working artist liaison and reppin’ gigs in Glasgow.

A sonic explosion at Noz 2016 – live acts for every appetite!

Live acts round up blog

Nozstock is a festival for everyone. No matter how old or young you are, whether you’re into reggae or indie, want to discover new bands and explore unusual sounds or just dance until you can’t feel your feet anymore, The Hidden Valley has something for every appetite and we’ve picked out a few acts for you to prove it!

Expect a huge range of music on the Orchard stage – from multi-instrumental extravaganzas to ska/ Britpop bands and ragey punk, there will be something to please each and every member of your gang!

Speaking of variety, we couldn’t help but begin with Slamboree. Described as “the perfect festival band” by Louder than War, Slamboree are a spectacular act, second to none. The 15-piece ensemble of theatrical artists and musicians haven’t released an album yet, but they have a strong presence on the UK festival circuit, building a loyal fanbase with their extravagant live shows. Their sound is a one-of-a-kind mash-up of electronic dance music, drum n’ bass, swing, and gypsy.

London-based Buster Shuffle, are coming to Nozstock with their brand new catchy album ‘Naked’. Their love for Britpop and ska is expressed through this album in its most complete form. Buster Shuffle have travelled all over Europe playing sold-out gigs and festivals. In the UK they have toured with the likes of The Holloways, The Wombats, Goldie Lookin’ Chain and Chas ‘n’ Dave. This band is clearly doing what they love and we can’t wait to see them do what they do best.

The Lovely Eggs are a garage-pop duo from Lancaster expected to shake things up with their angry, girly vocals, loud guitars and surreal lyrics. They have built a reputation for their live shows, playing from squats in Europe and charity shops in Leeds, to SxSW in Austin, Texas and a two-month tour of America. They have produced four albums gaining much support from BBC 6 Music while their last record, ‘This is Our Nowhere, received 8/10 in the NME.

Over at the Garden stage there is a little surprise for reggae lovers! Shanty represent the classic roots of reggae, but the soulful vocals of Sam Raywood breath a freshness that makes their sound truly modern.

Deep in the Cabinet of Lost Secrets, Collective 43 are Nozstock regulars, returning for the third time with their playful and engaging live show. They draw inspiration from New Orleans street bands while bringing in swing, funk, ragtime and dub references. With eight to 14 members performing, this multi-instrumental congregation will make the Cabinet of Lost Secrets the place to be!

At the Bandstand you will discover up-and-coming indie acts that’ll make you wonder why you’ve never heard of them! Nottingham is a city with a thriving underground scene and its new export, Kagoule is robust proof of that. Described as “ferocious noise-makers”, Kagoule produce a sound that entails widespread alternative rock references, but remains, as yet, unspecified. They have supported bands such as The Wytches, Iceage and Drenge and played last year’s BBC Introducing stage at Glastonbury Festival.

Cardiff can take pride in Houdini Dax. These three young lads have been playing together since school and they’ve become a hit booking across this summer’s festival calendar.  They bring a fresh take on the likes of The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, while their energy on stage will definitely get you moving!

Some of the best UK and international live bands will appear on our stages promising to make this year’s Nozstock unforgettable! If you’d like to explore more acts check out our hip-hop and DnB picks or dive into our full line up here!

The buffest DnB line up.

Goldie Randall DJ Marky Dub Phizix dnb at Nozstock

Our music team have been working like the clappers to bring you the tidiest DnB line up of the year.

As well as mammoth sets on the way from Friction ft. Linguistics, Dimension, Rene LaVice and The Prototypes, there’s a whole host of seminal turntablists representing at Noz this year. We thought we’d pick out a few highlights to whet your appetite!

This guy really needs no introduction; Goldie is a household name when it comes to drum ‘n’ bass and jungle. Since the start of his career in ’91, Goldie has performed at some of the biggest and best music venues and festivals across the planet. His first release, in ’92, was released under his alias ‘Ruffige Kru,’ and his calling card landed in ’94 when he started his own label, the world-renowned ‘Metalheadz’. The label has represented artists such as Dillinja, Total Science, and the late Diane Charlamaine. Goldie has his own style and his passion for music is apparent, resulting in him being awarded a MBE earlier this year by the Queen herself for services to music and young people, (Go Goldie!). Last year he brought his first show of the legendary album ‘Timeless’ to life, performing it with the Heritage Orchestra at sell-out shows across the country. This year is his eagerly awaited and unmissable debut appearance at The Hidden Valley. All hail Goldie!

Randall has been on the jungle scene for a whopping 24 years, a true pioneer of rave culture. His collaborations with other artists include legends DJ Hype, Andy C and Jumping Jack Frost. Randall’s sets are a fusion of DnB rollers and ‘ruff ‘n’ ready’ jungle- definitely one for the old school heads! Catch him tearing up the Garden Stage over the weekend.

This year we welcome the infamous DJ Marky! Hailing from Sau Paulo, Brazil, this guy is guarenteed to get your feet moving with his unique trademark style. With cult classics such as ‘LK’ and ‘Yellow Shoes’ under his belt, its no wonder people flock to see him play. Joined this year by the legendary MC GQ, Marky’s set will be a gud’un for sure, so sing it with us now- ‘It’s the waaaay!’

Back by popular demand, Dub Phizix returns to the farm this year, joined by one of the best UK MC’s around, Strategy. Dub Phizix smashed up the dance in 2012 with his set in The Cubicles, and we’re sure it’l be the same story with this deadly duo on the Garden Stage this year. With an unmistakeable style and catchy as anything tunes, such as ‘Marka’ and ‘I’m a creator’- this set is sure to go down a storm.

But that’s not all we’ve got for you…

Our other amazing acts include; Ulterior Motive b2b Jubei, Amoss, Teddy Killerz, Jaguar Skills, Rockwell, Xtrah & Stealth, Uncle Dugs, Octo Pi and more. So get your skankin’ shoes on, stretch those hamstrings and get ready for the best weekend of the year!!

Office manager Adele with her twin Sarah and other Nozstock lovelies Beth and Ffion.

We caught up with Adele, our info team queen, who spends her Nozstock weekend keeping you informed and ready for anything…

Describe yourself in three words (when you are in festival-mode!)…

Determined, Excited. Amazed.

Tell us about your best festival moment.

Highlights have been The Jim Jones Revue a couple of years ago on the Orchard Stage, The Keys on the Bandstand in 2014, and any time The Correspondents play!

Who would be your ultimate-beyond-ultimate dream headliner at Nozstock?

The Pixes and or PJ Harvey.

Do you have any pet peeves at festivals!?

I hate the long walk from your tent to the car in big festivals, especially when you are packing up and leaving!

What are your thoughts on the future of the festival industry?

Its really tough to be a successful festival, there are so many out there competing with each other. But everyone loves a good festival, so long may it continue!

Is Nozstock what you expected it to be after 17 years?

I haven’t been here since the very beginning, like some of the hard-core crew members! But I am very proud to be a part of it now. From being a punter to part of the crew, as the festival has grown, has made me feel like I am really part of something special.

When you’re not making Nozstock happen, what are you doing?

I live in London with my boyfriend, who is the Orchard Stage Manager. We are very lucky to live in London and have loads of music on our doorstep, which we are always exploring! And I work for a festival bar company so I know my way around a few now!

And finally, what three things are always in your Noz survival kit?

Coffee. My duvet. My team!
