Metalheadz, DJ Mag Bunker, Black Sun Empire + more to takeover The Cubicles

“I’d never heard of Nozstock but I remember speaking to Andy C years ago and he said he was playing, so that triggered something. Festivals like this, those kind of un-sung hero’s… it’s hard for them. I was told, you can f****** play anything here because the crowd, they get it. The first three tunes I thought, let me see how they react, and they really f******* reacted to the deeper side of the music. Sometimes I struggle at festivals because I wanna play underground and play on the edge. I don’t want to compromise the music. It’s always a really good test (of the type of crowd) when you can play a lot deeper.” (Goldie)

Now with 20 years under our belt it is without question that drum ‘n’ bass holds a special place in our heart. Since the very beginning we’ve championed this sound with some of the UK’s drum ‘n’ bass pioneers coming to perform down on the farm.  We assure you that 2018 will be no exception…it’s going to be unmissable.

*Please be upstanding* Kicking things off and one of our three Orchard headliners we have English D&B duo, Chase & Status, performing a DJ set alongside MC Rage. Having formed in 2003, the same time our official D&B area, The Cubicles, was born, it seems fitting to have them take centre stage at this years festival, we’re more excited than ever before. Do not miss this one Nozstockers!

After two epic live stream sets last year from Levelz and Uncle Dugs, DJ Mag Bunker are back and this year in The Cubicles. Catch them collaborating with Metalheadz ready to bring you a bag of bass heavy tricks.  On Friday night they welcome respected and revered producer Dillinja, Remidy MC, Hospital Records most eminent producer S.P.Y as a special guest, the man with 25 years’ experience under his belt, Randall with M.C Trafic plus support from Dispatch Recordings’ Amoss, Metalheadz head honcho Ant TC1, and our special guest and long standing Nozstock veteran, Octo Pi, and homegrown local talent Scope. There is only one place we will be spending our Friday night.

On Saturday, Black Sun Empire represent the finest in dark and tech fuelled alongside another killer line-up featuring Mollie Collins, our very own Nozstocker Modify Perspective, returning legends Uncle Dugs & Billy Daniel Bunter and a special set from one of our favourite producers, Bladerunner ft. Carasel. The Cubicles are looking stronger than ever before just get us in them cowsheds!

Sunday sees a takeover of mammoth proportions on The Garden Stage but we can’t reveal much more then this yet…all we’re saying is if you love D&B we’ll be giving you over 6 hours of it closing 2018’s festival with an almighty bang.

Catch live performances from Goldfrapp, Macka B, The Selecter, Dub Pistols, Electric Swing Circus, Kiko Bun, The Lovely Eggs, Oh My God! It’s The Church & many more… The theme for the 20th anniversary is Nozstalgia – anything from Gameboys and Ghostbusters to the Karate Kid and flared jeans. The festival takes place across an idyllic working farm set in beautiful countryside.

Interview: Macka B on how it all began, his new EP and more…

We caught up with British reggae artist, performer and activist Christopher McFarlane aka Macka B to discuss the beginning of his career and what he just can’t do without at a festival.

How did your career start?

My career started on Sound Systems in Wolverhampton playing in Youth Clubs. At first, just going to the record shop at weekends and bringing home music to play on the sound was enough for me. Carrying boxes and being part of the sound system was great. At home I  used to practice on the microphone but I wasn’t confident enough to do it in public. One day we set up the sound at a local youth club and I was left to watch the sound while the others got something to eat. Thinking everyone had gone, I picked up the microphone and tried it out. They hadn’t gone yet and they ran back saying ‘we didn’t know you could chat on the mic’. So from then I had to keep chatting on the sound.

What three things can’t you live without at a festival?

Music, water and vibes.

Who are you most looking forward to seeing at Nozstock?

Smiling faces.

What music are you working on right now?

Working on a new EP vintage style riddims.

We’re a big fan of your health is wealth video series…whats your favourite vegetable?

Callaloo.

What is your favourite memory from performing?

Performing at Jamaica’s Reggae Sunsplash for the first time and getting a great reception.

Macka B will be performing on the Orchard Stage, click here to find out who else is on the line up.

Orchard Stage 2018

Photo: Chloe Soffe, 2016, Orchard Stage

Guess what? There is only 78 days to go until the kingdom of Noz comes alive with 10 stages filled with sensational sound. We are just itching to see all your lovely faces!

You’ll find the Orchard Stage (our main stage) right in the middle of the farm and the line-up this year is…well, we wouldn’t want to brag, so you can see for yourself here.

To get you in the Noz spirit, you can listen to our Orchard Stage playlist on Spotify.

Here is a glimpse at who will be on the Orchard this year…

There is no introduction necessary for these DnB kings. First emerging in 2003, Chase & Status have risen to royalty status with their cutting edge beats and production techniques, resulting in achievements like spending 35 weeks in the UK top 40 with their album ‘No More Idols’ which subsequently gained double-platinum status. Previous Glastonbury headliners, Chase & Status continue to blend a multitude of genres to achieve their distinctive and unstoppable sound.

Next up and Ooh La La La La La, what a treat…we have the celestial synth surfers, Goldfrapp headlining the Orchard this year. Melting the boundaries of genre since their nascence in 1999, Alison Goldfrapp and Will Gregory have received vast critical acclaim, their third album Supernature (2005-06), including top five track “Ooh La La”, gained platinum status in the UK and was nominated for the Grammy for Best Electronic / Dance Album. With an ever-progressing sound, we are excited to be one of Goldfrapp’s 5 confirmed UK dates this year. It’s going to be special.

Following their divinely raucous performance on the Orchard Stage in 2017, we welcome back a congregation so funky, so soulful that it’s, well, positively unholy…it’s Oh My God! It’s The Church. Described as ‘nothing you’ve ever experienced before, yet as familiar as your Grandmammy’s biscuit tin’, this is a church service that must be experienced to be believed. So come and let the holy water wash over you and repent in this blessed disco party. Also a guaranteed party, we welcome festival legends, Electric Swing Circus who will be gracing the main stage with their swing / jazz / electro fusion

From Maryland to Liverpool, Jalen N’Gonda is a formidable talent, with his own sell out shows across the UK and beyond and we can’t wait to see him play in the heart of the festival. With previous support slots for industry giants like Laura Mvula, Martha Reeves and Lauryn Hill we implore you to come and soak in his soulful voice and bluesy arrangements (and hopefully the sun… fingers crossed).

Coming to Nozstock for the first time, Childcare are a band rapidly gaining recognition across the UK. After releasing their debut EP in April 2017, Ed, Emma, Rich and Glyn have since gone on to do a headline tour and support Bastille along with receiving extensive radio play of their three singles ‘Omega Grey’. ‘Film Club’, and ‘Kiss’. Head over to the page to find out how the band got their name.

There isn’t enough space on this lovely little page to give you details of all the Orchard Stage acts, but you can find details of them all here.

Also on the line-up: Mad Apple Circus, Smiley and the Underclass, Harvey Causon, Lazy Day, The Whipjacks, Seas of Mirth, Catholic Action, Mr Tea and the Minions, Samsara Collective, Buffos Wake, The Lovely Eggs, The Selecter, Dub Pistols, Gemini Jets, Macka B & The Roots Ragga Band, We Are Scientists, Mad Dog Mcrea, Honey Feet, The Blockheads

More acts announced for #20yearsOfNoz

Nozstockers! Feast your eyes on our 2nd wave announcement and make sure you bag yourself a ticket to the best party of the summer – www.nozstock.com/tickets.

The Orchard hosts some amazing artists performing this summer. No stranger to festivals around the world, our first new headliners We Are Scientists have cemented their status within the rock genre – from Brooklyn to Bromyard, this is going to be really special. Next up, The Blockheads,  true UK legends, bringing their electric funk, rock, punk and a catalogue of hits down to the farm. Joining them we have Honeyfeet, a band unlike any other, with an infectiously danceable groove, guttural passion and impeccable style. Completing The Orchard Stage we have Jalen N’Gonda‘s tender soulful voice, a joy to behold, and Mad Dog McCrea will be providing a unique mixture of folk rock, pop, gypsy jazz, bluegrass and shake-your-ass music.

The Garden known for providing it’s usual eclectic mix of urban sounds and acoustic musings, and our second wave line-up will be doing exactly that. Recently described as a mash up of Basement Jaxx and The Rocky Horror Picture Show performing at The Moulin Rouge, Slamboree Soundsystem return to The Hidden Valley and we welcome Spunge to join our 20th Anniversary Ska and Skank party as one of the leading acts in the ska scene, whilst master junglist Uncle Dugs  and hardcore legend Billy’Daniel’ Bunter will bring the noise. Being blessed as a wordsmith has allowed Gardna to approach the music game from a fresh perspective, CW Jones brings a feast of flavours and Verbal Highz blend a heady cocktail of punchy boom-bap production, infused with complex, tongue twisting lyricism. There’s also Feelgood Experiment, Natty Speaks, Almatic, Revrt and Old Baby Mackerel.

In the bass-reverberating Cubicles, Mollie Collins’ sets feature beautiful liquid vocals over brutal jump-up basslines, alongside drum and bass heavyweight Dread Recordings’ Blade Runner ft Carasel and there’s a welcome return for Liquifyah’s head honcho Modify Perspective.

In Laughing Stock, we are very excited to announce the socially and politically-charged Reginald D Hunter as Saturday night headliner. Reginald remains on a constant quest for the truth, with his razor-sharp comedy always capturing the mood of the world. Tony Law takes in time-travelling dogs and focuses on the absurdities of everyday life. Paul Sweeney‘s musical musings and inimitable moustache are framed by his bone-dry wit, and experienced Nozstocker Rich Wilson is returning to the farm with his razor-sharp suits, timing and delivery. In 2017 Harriet Dyer was selected for the prestigious Edinburgh Fringe ‘Big Value Showcase’, proof that some of the darkest things in life can also be the funniest.

In a post-coup land whose citizens have been left to piece together their own rules of engagement, incredible practitioners of theatre, circus and craft work have moved in to make The Altered State the new epicentre of play and surreal expression at Noz. Brand new for 2018, by day expect the unexpected – games, workshops, drama, poetry, impromptu paint fights at the Sunken Yard – and by night party on with fire shows, disco tunes and madcap roaming performances. .

Over to The Dingle now, and representing the very intimate Bandstand, we have Weirds, are a fully immersive, musical experience and Scottish born singer-songwriter Kerri Watt, providing a dose of celtic charm. They are joined by Johnny Smyth, Josh Ace, Boatbar to Hamburg, Von Horn, Bone Dry Records Showcase and True Strays.

The sublime Cabinet Of Lost Secrets have been getting in on the action too. There’s soul and hip-hop from Normanton Street, Seas Of Mirth bring their sea shanty sound, Mango Factory are a grooved-up, funk-Latin-soul band; Ask My Bull crackle with an infectious energy and Almatic effortlessly meld styles including neo soul, folk and breakbeat. They are joined by Swansea Laptop Orchestra, King Solomon Soundsystem, Razzomo, Mohawkestra alongside the usual range of oddities and secret surprises.

Finally, after an amazing debut in 2017, Elephant’s Grave have announced a huge line-up as they welcome takeovers from the premier online dance music authority Data Transmission, award winning immersive party purveyors Rumble In The Jungle, Subwork and Emotion. DJs announced include Paul Flynn, Kid Cut, Ron Mexico, Kelvin 373, Gardna, Leo Sampson & Clifford Junior ft Natty Campbell & Shumba Youth, Tenz, 160ft Deep, Delirium, Oberon and that’s just scratching the surface…

Not to mention some amazing workshops keeping your mini ‘uns busy in Little Wonderland and a whole host of games and silliness (would you expect anything less?)

Nozstockers, we cannot wait. And this is just a taster of the fun. Head over to our line-up page for more exciting artists waiting for you in The Hidden Valley and we’ll see you in 86 days!

Ferocious Dog Q&A

Ferocious Dog are a full-on six-piece band that encompass folk infused with rock, reggae and Celtic vibrations. The combination of instruments creates a palette of sound that offers infinite variations: going in hard to get the audience up and moving, or slipping into melodic passages and dub-like fusions.

From playing Glastonbury in front of a massive crowd, to sharing the stage with The Levellers on their European tour, Ferocious Dog left the audience under no doubt that they had witnessed a band that has the talent and passion to go on and dominate the folk/punk music scene.

With European tours booked for 2017 and slots at some of the UK’s favourite festivals, we can’t wait to welcome them down on the farm and ahead of their performance we asked them a few questions….

If you ran your own festival, who would you pick to headline and why?

Ken Bonsall said Friday night House of Pain, Saturday night Rancid, Sunday night Levellers because these are 3 of my favourite bands

What are your 3 most essential items for a festival?

Beer. Beer carrier. Cheese and hp brown sauce cob

Do you have any embarrassing festival stories?

Trying to stop Les carter aka Fruitbat from drunkenly gatecrashing the Avalon cafe stage while a band was playing. But it turned out in the end that he knew the band who were Flipron

What is your best memory from a festival?

Seeing Dans face at Glastonbury ’92 coming out of the Carter USM mosh pit at 12 years old.

It was a picture

What was the first festival you went to? Tell us about it.

Glastonbury 92. Main reason we went is so Dan could see the Levellers for the first time and so we could all see Carter USM

Highlight of your career so far?

Selling out Rock City on our first attempt and making history as the first unsigned band to do so in its 35 year history. And it’s our home town of Nottingham which made it extra special

Hayseed Dixie~A Hillbilly Rave

Photo: Rowan Zynoni

When John Wheeler (aka Barley Scotch) and Mike Daly ‘drank roughly enough whiskey to float a battleship from the Florida Coast over to Portugal and back’ in the summer of 2000, they were, unbeknownst to them, paving the Bourbon soaked path to the Rockgrass superpower that is Hayseed Dixie. Adding Reverend Hank Williams and Bishop Bon Scott to the their East Nashville coterie led to the first Rockgrass revolution – ten AC/DC songs ‘reinvented as Appalachian Mountain hillbilly rave-ups.’

17 years, 14 albums and 1,200 live shows later we have the pleasure of welcoming these genre defining gents to Nozstock. With a mix of originals and reimagined versions of everything from Motörhead’s Ace Of Spades to Bob Marley’s Buffalo Soldier, with Hayseed Dixie, you are guaranteed ‘high energy showmanship, loads of facial hair, an occasional flash of nipple and plenty of posing with one foot on the monitors whipping the crowd up and pulling preposterous rock god poses all combined with a wildness that’s almost punky’ (idp, Louder Than War, 2015).

Amongst the jocularity of their jamboree, there is political and social commentary and in their recently released ‘Free Your Mind…And Your Grass Will Follow’ (April 2017), their ability to fuse, transcend and conquer genre norms resonates loud and clear. Hayseed Dixie describe themselves as a ‘proper force’ that ‘most people either love, hate, or have never heard of. There isn’t really any middle ground, nor should they be.’

Are you ready to do-si-do ‘til dawn with this talented Tennessee troupe on the Orchard Stage? We certainly are!

The Sugarhill Gang

Celebrated ‘Rappers Delight’ hit aficionados The Sugarhill Gang will be making an appearance in the Orchard for a legendary set of disco-funk and hip-hop vibes. The sensational trio, originating from Englewood New Jersey, were named after the culture-rich Sugar Hill neighbourhood in Harlem by producer Sylvia Robinson in the 1970s, owner of Sugar Hill label.

Robinson, on the lookout for a new and interesting sound, discovered 22 year old nightclub bouncer Henry Lee Jackson AKA Big Bank Hank, rapping Cold Crush Brothers’ rhymes outside the pizza parlour he worked at, rapping DJ Master Gee (Guy O’Brien) was soon after auditioned in Robinson’s car. Adding 6’5” rapper Wonder Mike into the mix, Robinson was unable to pick one out of the three, so decided to create a group and the Sugarhill Gang were born.

Sugarhill Gang Rapper's Delight Original single

They were assembled in 1979 to record a revolutionary new hip-hop single, reinventing the 70s music scene after disco had reached its peak. The Sugarhill Gang was the group that brought hip-hop to mainstream America, awakening the hip-hop scene with their first explosive single ‘Rapper’s Delight’. It was the first rap single ever to become a top 40 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 and sold 8 million copies, taking their fresh and funky sound global.

The legends took the music world by storm, recording hit hip-hop records including ‘8th Wonder’, making it to the number 15 spot on the R&B charts, and crowd-starting ‘Apache’.

After taking a short break, The Sugarhill Gang returned to fame in 1999 and recorded ‘Jump on it’ a children’s hip-hop album.

The first rap group to reach international fame, they brought rap and hip-hop culture to the masses and helped launch a genre that has continued to grow and influence. Now the Sugarhill Gang are making a long awaited comeback with the addition of Melle Mel and a 30 date European tour, including the famed Funk & Soul Weekender and Boomtown festivals, with our little old Nozstock being one of their stop-offs in the middle.

Come join us my friends! A chance to revisit the roots of rap, get ready to ‘boogie to the rhythm of the boogie, the beat’ with the hip-hop troupe themselves, here down on t’farm. The Gang promise to haul you through hit after hip-hop hit, get your booty moving and grooving down in the Orchard “Hip-hop, hippie to the hippie, to the hip-hip-hop and you don’t stop”

How D’ya Like Them Apples…?

They say that variety is the spice of life; if that’s true then the 2017 Orchard Stage is spicier than a jalapeno on hot sauce dancing the Salsa.

Nestled at the heart of the Nozstock site and set in a gently sloping natural auditorium, the Orchard is the festival’s main stage. By day a whole load of fun and family friendly entertainment occurs in, on and around it but by night it becomes a different beast entirely – a variety stage like no other, with the electric atmosphere of a stage many, many times the size, but so intimate that you can almost feel the breath of the artists on your face as they perform.

This stage has seen memorable action from Jurassic 5, Martha Reeves & The Vandellas, Jake Bugg, Blockheads with Phill Jupitus, The Proclaimers, Imelda May, Ben Howard, Roots Manuva and Fun Lovin Criminals to name but a few, with many a cider drinker lured in to dance a merry jig or two.

This year’s lineup continues to build on the fantastic work of the last eighteen years, bringing the Orchard a mind-bending mix of acts from all over the world – with rock ‘n’ roll, indie, ska, hip hop, psych and much more…

Jurassic 5 on the Orchard Stage at Nozstock 2016

Jurassic 5 in the Orchard in 2016

The 2017 line-up looks as promising as past years’ with the hobo rock ‘n’ roll legend that is Seasick Steve taking his place at the helm, bringing his gravelly basslines from an assortment of cobbled-together guitars and his dulcet tones waxing lyrical about sleeping under bridges.

Seasick Steve plays the Orchard Stage at Nozstock 2017

Since his breakthrough performance on Jools Holland in 2006, Steve’s toured internationally, received Brit Award nominations and rubbed shoulders with the likes of Led Zeppelin. But when he picks up that three-stringed guitar it may as well just be you and him schmoozing round a camp-fire…

From soulful hobo-rock, to bouncy ska from the Stiff Joints (see, we promised variety!)

An eleven-piece ‘ska army’ from the wild West Midlands, The Stiff Joints are always so popular at Nozstock they’ve become a bit of a resident band. They’ll be bringing their infectious brand of two-tone ska along too, making it impossible to sit still in their presence.

Taking the accolade of ‘the ultimate feel good festival act’ from BBC Introducing, the guys are currently working on a new release for 2017. Exciting!

Talking of legends – also billed for the Orchard in 2017 are indie household names of the 80s and 90s, Happy Mondays. Their 1990’s album ‘Pills ’n’ Thrills and Bellyaches’ went platinum, selling more than 350,000 copies and marking them as one of the most influential bands to come out of the UK.

ince then we’ve enjoyed regular releases from the Happies, including 2012’s best-of album ‘Double Double Good’, extensive tours, various TV appearances, sell-out arenas and numerous festival shows across the UK and Europe. It’s amazing to see them play Noz with pretty much the original line up too.

They brought their own special brand of hip-hop into the mainstream in the 1970s, and now to Nozstock in 2017; The Sugarhill Gang are mostly famed for their iconic 1979 hit ‘Rapper’s Delight’, which was the first true hip-hop track to hit the Top 40. EVER.

The old-school hip-hop troupe will be bringing their infectious disco-funk sounds to the Orchard Stage for our audio enjoyment and guarantee to have every age of Nozstocker smoothly grooving their way through the weekend.

You want cult heroes? We’ve got cult heroes! Beans on Toast is an Essex born folk songwriter, singing simple songs that tackle big issues, making you laugh but also making you think, with honest lyrics and quick wit.

He’s opened for Kate Nash, Glastonbury and toured with Frank Turner- his eighth album ‘Spanner in the Works’ was met with critical applause as he explored the themes of anger and love using a more worldly approach to his historically folk-punk style. He always retains that DIY festival feel, which is why he’s a firm favourite for the Nozstock stage.

More cult heroes!

Ferocious Dog are well known for their high octane live performances, mixing folk, rock, reggae and Celtic vibrationstogether to create a sound that has been fit to tour with the LeveFerocious Dog play the Orchard Stage at Nozstock 2017llers, Wonder Stuff and New Model Army.

In 2015 they played the Field of Avalon at Glastonbury, bringing record numbers to the stage. Nozstockers can expect much of the same from this high energy folk/punk fusion act, to say we’re excited is an understatement; pogos ready!

Variety is what we’re about here at Nozstock and what would a variety stage be without a big dollop of hillbilly rave, in the form of Hayseed Dixie.

The Dixies will be playing original songs alongside covers of AC/DC classics and reinterpretations of R&B and soul hits. These purveyors of ‘rockgrass’ will have you chortling, jigging and generally do-si-do-ing ’til dawn. Brush down your Stetson and hunt down your stompin’ boots, this stage is a’goin to get noisy!

But wait…there’s more!

The Orchard crams in as many acts as possible over the weekend, including The Correspondents, Land of the Giants, The Meow Meows, Jasper in the Company of Others, Oh My God It’s The Church!, Chainska Brassika, Hannah Peel and more!
