Do it for the cows!

For most of the year the lush green rolling slopes of Nozstock are home to a herd of hungry Hereford cows, who are always eager to get back into their fields after the festival. With this in mind we like to do our bit to preserve the land and last year we were lucky enough to win a bronze Greener Festival Award.

So what have we introduced this year you might be asking? Ladies and Gentlemen please be upstanding as for the first time we have introduced a £5 eco bond to help us keep the site even more clean, green, and cow friendly.

How does it work? You will be given bin bags when you arrive, fill up a bag of recycling or rubbish bring it down to our new cecyrcling centre to sort on the Sunday afternoon or Monday morning and you will get your £5 back. Simples!

Our clean campsite team will also be coming round to meet everyone and provide some gentle words of encouragement. Clean campsite judge, Cydney, said, “The campsite is a collection of little communities and we will be visiting your area to check out the friendliness and cleanliness of your crew. There are some great prizes to be won and you can extra points for recycling, decorating your area and showing us any special skills.”

We are also introducing a new clean campsite award this year – The Neighbourly Award. Clean Campsite judge Cass said, “The Neigbourly award celebrates the finest in human compassion and good will. We will be looking for tales of those who have reached out and helped their Noz-door neighbours”

So we will be asking you to “do it for the cows!” and you might just get a pat on the back for picking up your tat!

There are plenty of other opportunities to help green-up the festival; have you considered how you are getting to Nozstock yet? Check out our travel page for buses, lift sharing, and more!

If you are coming by car, why not offer up any spare seats through the GoCarShare website – by offering a spare seat, or by putting in a request for a lift on the site you could be in with a chance of winning a pair of tickets to Nozstock 2018! Alternatively Coaches are running from key locations including London, Bristol, Hereford and Worcester.

This year there will also be a reuseable cup scheme at the bar. Pay a pound for your first cup and you can get a fresh clean cup every time you bring it back to the bar.

Charity Begins at Noz

Down on the farm we like to make sure that we give something back to our lovely community and help some great causes at the same time. This year we are supporting some great causes, so, if you need a break from the festival buzz here’s what you can do…

Watch and enjoy the performing artists supported by the Herefordshire community music charity Music Pool on The Bandstand.

The Music Pool’s work benefits a wide range of people of absolutely all ages, abilities and backgrounds; the youth music project Livewire provides workshops, helps to promote gigs and supports training opportunities, courses and recording sessions for young people in the Herefordshire area. Project manager Nicky Jaques has said “Performing at Nozstock provides the opportunity for young people to play to a festival audience and to soak up the sounds of the other bands and artists. They gain exposure to new music which will inspire them to keep developing their own sound and the whole experience gives them a massive confidence boost as young musicians.” Great stuff.

You could come try your luck on our Human Fruit Machine….!

What is this wondrous idea you speak off? The Human Fruit Machine is quite literally what it says on the tin – A. Human. Fruit. Machine. With 50% of the profits going to good causes what’s not to love? It’s part of Nozstock’s charm, we have something refreshingly different to do around every corner.

Sad and lonely old tent? No problem! Unfortunately we all know that tents and camping equipment get left behind at festivals…but fear not – you can donate your unloved camping equipment and tents to People in Motion. Focused on providing support and aid to displaced people your unwanted tents will be packed up and sent to help the refugee crisis in Europe and the Middle East. Woo!

We are also supporting Trees for Cities again this year. They are the only charity who work on an international scale to create greener cities, raising awareness of the importance of tree planting in urban areas. Trees for Cities focus on improving the lives of people living in cities as well as helping to inspire children to grow and eat healthily. Since 1993 they have engaged over 70,000 people to plant over 600,000 trees (that’s an average of 21,428 loo rolls worth per person). These trees were planted in parks, schools, housing estates and streets to revitalise these areas, improving the lives of local people who live there.

As part of our green initiative scheme American Rockers Hayseed Dixie will be helping plant a tree to our ever growing Celebritree Avenue, with help from Trees for Cities. The tree will accompany those planted by The Proclaimers, Molotov Jukebox, Henning When, Mr B. The Gentleman Rhymer and Electric Swing Circus. This gives you the chance to see your favourite artists supporting environmental awareness (and getting their hands dirty).

If you need to unwind after a long day ‘festivalling’ then you can head down to our Healing Zone for a treatment from Yeleni. The lovely Yeleni provide a place of peace for those having to deal with very difficult issues in their life, giving support and offering free therapy to people with chronic illnesses. They’ll be offering massages, hypnotherapy and various workshops to help your physical and emotional health. £10 of the money you pay for your treatment goes towards Yeleni’s charity work. By having a treatment you will help to deliver these therapy sessions to anyone with chronic illness and cancer around Herefordshire.

Each year the amazing Oxfam team provide some of our stewards who help keep you safe and secure on site.  The money raised from working with Nozstock goes towards helping people living in poverty around the world; it could buy 52 cows or 381 chickens for farmers, provide shelter and clean water for 32 Syrian refugee families or enable 247 young women to join schools in Ethiopia. Go us!

Three things we value really highly at Nozstock are creating a greener environment to live in, supporting all members of our wonderful community and having as much fun as possible. Getting involved with our charities and supporting causes does all of this so don’t miss out!

Celebritree Avenue 2017 Edition

It’s that time of year again where we announce the act who cares about our planet enough to get their hands dirty, roll up their sleeves and plant a tree in our famous Celebritree Avenue. This year the act picking up the shovel will be American Rock band Hayseed Dixie. Inspired by the legendary AC/DC the talented Hayseed Dixie will not only be bringing a hillbilly rave to Nozstock this year but also looking out for our environment and supporting our green initiative scheme by planting us a tree. The famous tree will sit amongst many others in our tree walk of fame along with Mr B. The Gentleman Rhymer, Molotov Jukebox, The Electric Swing Circus, The Proclaimers and Henning Wehn.

We look forward to welcoming a Hayseed Dixie tree to the avenue!

Award winning green efforts…

We are very pleased to announce that Nozstock has been recognised with an Improvers Award in A Greener Festival Awards 2016. Improvers Awards are given to events which exhibit a significant engagement with the process of reducing environmental impact. A Greener Festival is a non-profit organisation dedicated to reducing the environmental impact of music festivals and events. Since 2007 they have assessed over 300 festivals and have been instrumental in helping events to become more environmentally conscious. Since the schemes relaunch in 2016, festivals have been challenged more than ever to be awarded so we are especially thrilled that our efforts have been recognised in this way. A huge thank you to all the AGF assessors and all our punters, crew, artists and traders who did everything they could to make Nozstock 2017 clean and green!

Going greener for 2017

nightsign

We’ve been busy hatching plans for how we can go greener for Noz’ 2017.  One of the big suggestions to come out of the survey from you guys, was the introduction of a refundable eco-bond to encourage visitors to clean up their campsite. These have been introduced across a whole bunch o’ festivals lately and we feel it’s time to do the same here in the Hidden Valley. So, you’ll find a £5 deposit is added to each ticket when purchasing from today onwards. This is fully refunded at the festival on the Monday morning, when you provide us with a full bin bag of rubbish (no bottles and cans please – they’re for the recycling), and your barcoded eco-bond ticket. We’re really looking forward to seeing how sparkling the site can look with a gentle nudge in a greener direction and thank you for all the other green and clean suggestions you’ve been sending in – keep ’em coming!

Nozstock up for The Greener Festival Award 2016

Great news Nozzers! We has been nominated with just 5 other festivals to win The Greener Festival Award 2016.  The award is to celebrate festivals in the UK who are striving to minimise their environmental impact. All shortlisted events are judged by A Greener Festival – a not for profit organisation who have assesed over 350 festivals since 2007. We are thrilled that our efforts to make Nozstock as clean and green as we can have been recognised. Big thanks to our Queen of Green Kathy Tate and our Clean Campsite Crew for all their efforts. Final winners are announced at the UK Festival Awards on 28th November. Good luck to all the other nominees!

All things green in 2016

Claire Leach 2016 - Campsite

We are still on a complete high from Nozstock 2016. We were blown away with how all you Nozstocker’s upped your green game this year, by leaving your campsites cleaner than ever and handing in your rubbish and recycling to the bin bag exchange. Along with you beautiful lot, the traders that took part deserve a round or applause or five for their top notch carbon-footprint consciousness. We encourage all of our food traders to be as environmentally friendly as possible, ensuring that only biodegradable serve-ware is used and that Noz is full of local, Fairtrade and organic produce.

Each year, we give a Green Food Trader Award to the stall that comes to Nozstock with the most innovative and effective ways to reduce their environmental impact and who’ve shown an all round respect for our precious mother earth. The winner of 2016’s Green Food Trader Award is, drum roll please…Hot Rocks Pizza! Well deserved winners, they scored top marks on all environmental aspects of their operation and we were particularly impressed by their superb portable pizza oven which was fuelled by waste wood briquettes (wood that would have otherwise gone to landfill). Previous winners have included the Chicken Cow Café and Nomad Curries, who stood out from the crowd through going the extra spoonful to ensure their environmental impact was as low as possible. A huge well done and thank you to Hot Rocks Pizza (and all of our previous award winners) for their truly awesome food and being so respectful of the environment.

In addition to the Green Food Trader Award, every year at Noz we welcome someone from our our wonderful line-up to plant a tree on our Celebritree Avenue, with help from Charity Trees for Cities. This year, we were chuffed that comedy legend Henning Wehn wanted to join the likes of Molotov Jukebox and The Proclaimers and leave his leafy legacy for many Nozstocks to come. When we spoke to Henning earlier this year about environmental awareness and his love of the clean country air, he said ‘trees are obviously important to clean the air and as a habitat for wildlife. Trees are also crucial to generate a sense of community. Wherever there’s trees, plants or flowers it feels like an obvious place to come and pass the time.’ Thank you Mr Wehn for planting a tree on our lovely little avenue

As ever, we are aiming to further develop and improve our green initiatives for 2017. Stay tuned for how we get on with coming up with new gloriously green ideas.
