How D’ya Like Them Apples…?

They say that variety is the spice of life; if that’s true then the 2017 Orchard Stage is spicier than a jalapeno on hot sauce dancing the Salsa.

Nestled at the heart of the Nozstock site and set in a gently sloping natural auditorium, the Orchard is the festival’s main stage. By day a whole load of fun and family friendly entertainment occurs in, on and around it but by night it becomes a different beast entirely – a variety stage like no other, with the electric atmosphere of a stage many, many times the size, but so intimate that you can almost feel the breath of the artists on your face as they perform.

This stage has seen memorable action from Jurassic 5, Martha Reeves & The Vandellas, Jake Bugg, Blockheads with Phill Jupitus, The Proclaimers, Imelda May, Ben Howard, Roots Manuva and Fun Lovin Criminals to name but a few, with many a cider drinker lured in to dance a merry jig or two.

This year’s lineup continues to build on the fantastic work of the last eighteen years, bringing the Orchard a mind-bending mix of acts from all over the world – with rock ‘n’ roll, indie, ska, hip hop, psych and much more…

Jurassic 5 on the Orchard Stage at Nozstock 2016

Jurassic 5 in the Orchard in 2016

The 2017 line-up looks as promising as past years’ with the hobo rock ‘n’ roll legend that is Seasick Steve taking his place at the helm, bringing his gravelly basslines from an assortment of cobbled-together guitars and his dulcet tones waxing lyrical about sleeping under bridges.

Seasick Steve plays the Orchard Stage at Nozstock 2017

Since his breakthrough performance on Jools Holland in 2006, Steve’s toured internationally, received Brit Award nominations and rubbed shoulders with the likes of Led Zeppelin. But when he picks up that three-stringed guitar it may as well just be you and him schmoozing round a camp-fire…

From soulful hobo-rock, to bouncy ska from the Stiff Joints (see, we promised variety!)

An eleven-piece ‘ska army’ from the wild West Midlands, The Stiff Joints are always so popular at Nozstock they’ve become a bit of a resident band. They’ll be bringing their infectious brand of two-tone ska along too, making it impossible to sit still in their presence.

Taking the accolade of ‘the ultimate feel good festival act’ from BBC Introducing, the guys are currently working on a new release for 2017. Exciting!

Talking of legends – also billed for the Orchard in 2017 are indie household names of the 80s and 90s, Happy Mondays. Their 1990’s album ‘Pills ’n’ Thrills and Bellyaches’ went platinum, selling more than 350,000 copies and marking them as one of the most influential bands to come out of the UK.

ince then we’ve enjoyed regular releases from the Happies, including 2012’s best-of album ‘Double Double Good’, extensive tours, various TV appearances, sell-out arenas and numerous festival shows across the UK and Europe. It’s amazing to see them play Noz with pretty much the original line up too.

They brought their own special brand of hip-hop into the mainstream in the 1970s, and now to Nozstock in 2017; The Sugarhill Gang are mostly famed for their iconic 1979 hit ‘Rapper’s Delight’, which was the first true hip-hop track to hit the Top 40. EVER.

The old-school hip-hop troupe will be bringing their infectious disco-funk sounds to the Orchard Stage for our audio enjoyment and guarantee to have every age of Nozstocker smoothly grooving their way through the weekend.

You want cult heroes? We’ve got cult heroes! Beans on Toast is an Essex born folk songwriter, singing simple songs that tackle big issues, making you laugh but also making you think, with honest lyrics and quick wit.

He’s opened for Kate Nash, Glastonbury and toured with Frank Turner- his eighth album ‘Spanner in the Works’ was met with critical applause as he explored the themes of anger and love using a more worldly approach to his historically folk-punk style. He always retains that DIY festival feel, which is why he’s a firm favourite for the Nozstock stage.

More cult heroes!

Ferocious Dog are well known for their high octane live performances, mixing folk, rock, reggae and Celtic vibrationstogether to create a sound that has been fit to tour with the LeveFerocious Dog play the Orchard Stage at Nozstock 2017llers, Wonder Stuff and New Model Army.

In 2015 they played the Field of Avalon at Glastonbury, bringing record numbers to the stage. Nozstockers can expect much of the same from this high energy folk/punk fusion act, to say we’re excited is an understatement; pogos ready!

Variety is what we’re about here at Nozstock and what would a variety stage be without a big dollop of hillbilly rave, in the form of Hayseed Dixie.

The Dixies will be playing original songs alongside covers of AC/DC classics and reinterpretations of R&B and soul hits. These purveyors of ‘rockgrass’ will have you chortling, jigging and generally do-si-do-ing ’til dawn. Brush down your Stetson and hunt down your stompin’ boots, this stage is a’goin to get noisy!

But wait…there’s more!

The Orchard crams in as many acts as possible over the weekend, including The Correspondents, Land of the Giants, The Meow Meows, Jasper in the Company of Others, Oh My God It’s The Church!, Chainska Brassika, Hannah Peel and more!

Groove to reggae by day at Elephant’s Grave

Chapman’s Circus may be long gone but the weird and wonderful vibes remain…

By day, you’ll be grooving to dub and reggae with the likes of Ital Sounds, who will be bringing everything from classic roots to modern scrub-a-dub sounds like Mungos Hi Fi and Steppas’ music.

Drumlove perform as a full drumming troupe, a sight and sound to behold. Go With The Flo, Juggla and DJ Shogun, bring a collective 46 years worth of reggae experience to the decks, so expect some winding grooves and plenty of dubby flavour. On Friday night DJ Feva is bringing his unique combination of hip-hop skills and reggae knowledge to drop bass heavy beats and live mash ups that shake up dance floors from Birmingham to Brazil. And expect something a little tropical from MadMax.

Ital Sounds will be joined over the weekend by Bristol-based Boom Sound, bringing underground reggae in the form of Fat Stash, who have championed artists such as Gardna and Uncle Dugs, are also joining the party to pump out some serious reggae, dancehall and dubwise tunes. They’ll be representing alongside KreedHold Tight Collective, and many more.

Elephant’s Grave stampeding into Nozstock 2017

Elephant’s Grave will be coming alive for its first Nozstock appearance! Over three days, this brand new venue will be a haven for dub and reggae in the daytime and house and techno after dark.

Today, we’re profiling the house contingent…

Opening the stage is DJ, producer and innovator, House Meanz House, who will be charging our senses with his deep bass lines. With breaks as sharp as tusks, HMH’s synths and tech house style are beyond big league.

Hosting the Elephant’s Grave first night of Noz 2017, DJ and promoter collective From Berlin With Love are here to serve you a cocktail of all the finest minimalist house and techno, shaken up with a hearty dose of rough ‘n’ ready Bristolian clubbing attitude. Followed on Saturday by one of house music’s most exciting artists, Dirty Secretz, who will be serving a mash up of his legendary remixes that feature the likes of X-Press 2 and K-Klass alongside solo releases that have been unleashed on respected House music labels including Skint, Stealth and Nervous.

Fatboy Slim’s favourite, Sonny Wharton, who has established himself as one of the finest DJ/Producers to emerge from the UK, will be hosting the party on Saturday night. Sonny’s ability to captivate audiences with his energetic performance and diverse track selection prominently positions him behind the decks of the world’s biggest clubs and festivals. Joining Sonny will be DJ collective Forte who will be providing a smorgasbord of futuristic house and techno, trampling over borders and boundaries and blowing your socks off in the process.

This is certainly a line-up that will have you dying to dance in the Elephant’s Grave. For full billing check out the dedicated line up page here.

Who in Darnation is Seasick Steve?

American hobo blues artist Seasick Steve is famous for his creative use of self-made guitars and the mature age he broke into the mainstream. He shot to stardom over ten years ago, with his gnarly, raw performance on Jools Holland’s Hootenanny in 2006. He has continued to enthrall music fans from every corner of the globe ever since with his expressive and rustic take on the blues.

Since 2006  Steve’s released seven albums as well as winning a MOJO Award in 2007 for Best Breakthrough Act and headlining the iconic SSE Arena, Wembley last year. Collaborating with rock legends such as Jack White and Led Zepplin’s John Paul Jones over the years he’s come a long way from living rough after leaving home at fourteen and playing to anyone who’d listen.

“Hobos are people who move around looking for work, tramps are people who move around but don’t look for work, and bums are people who don’t move and don’t work. I’ve been all three.”

Part of his early life was spent riding freight trains around America, working from job to job; he’d been a cowboy and a farmhand before settling into a life of music. He famously said “Hobos are people who move around looking for work, tramps are people who move around but don’t look for work, and bums are people who don’t move and don’t work. I’ve been all three.” These stages in his life are often reflected in his music where he sings of his journeys on the open road; his stories of drinking and heartbreak and winning the hearts of his audiences through his honest and gritty lyrics.

Throughout the seventies, Steve worked as a session musician, as well as producing an album by indie rock band Modest Mouse. He released his first solo album, ‘Doghouse Music’ while he was in his sixties, with his more recent albums depicting a more confident performer.

He’ toured extensively since his rise to fame; playing a variety of festivals over the years from Glastonbury to Fuji Rock in Japan. He’s a charismatic live performer, both he and drummer Dan Magnusson combine raw sounds and emotion to create a captivating live experience. Regardless of Seasick Steve’s highly romanticised backstory, his music is compelling enough to support itself.

We’re thrilled to welcome Seasick Steve to the Orchard Stage and can’t wait for the toe-tapping hootin’ and hollerin’ to commence in true Nozstock fashion.

Give a child a cardboard box …

… and they will make a castle. Our Little Wonderland Kids Area encourages this creativity, letting kids (and big kids) imaginations’ run wild, with chances to get a bit messy in the process. The good news is that this year’s ‘Keepin’ it Surreal’ theme gives us free reign to make the weirdest and wackiest creations yet!

This year we’ve got it all, from mask-making to kite-crafting and everything in between.

Haven’t got time to think about a costume for this year’s festival? Fear not, our ‘Surreal Sculptural Headdresses’ and ‘Festival Fashion’ have got you covered… in glitter and feathers. Throughout the weekend, parents and littl’ns can channel their inner Dali and create a masterpiece at our ‘Freedom of Expression’ table, then make a frame worthy of showcasing the work at the ‘Surreal Frame’ workshop. To top off the topsy-turviness, you can experience the world upside down by making your very own pinhole camera.

And there is so much more in the melting clock – we mean, melting pot – of activities our wonderland has to offer. Check out the full listings of activities on our Little Wonderland page and grab your tickets to join in the fun – remember 12s and under get into Nozstock scott-free!

Jurassic 5 @ Nozstock: The Hidden Valley

This weekend, we saw something truly inspirational and extraordinary! Jurassic 5 made Nozstock: The Hidden Valley their own. Being one of the headliners, Jurassic 5 we’re clearly ready to be the stars of the show and did so in such an inspirational way. IMG_0984

Nozstock: The Hidden Valley is a Festival in Herefordshire, West Midlands, which attracted thousands of music fans over the weekend to see hundreds of acts over a number of stages. With the likes of Jurassic 5 and Imelda May headlining, it holds a great variation of music genres for every music lovers taste. The Hidden Valley really encapsulates the festival-goer and takes them into a wonderful world of their own interpretation. Like we always say, no two people will ever have the same experience at a festival. Line up’s can be great or a bit lack-luster in everyone’s opinion. But its what the festival goer and the performing acts make of it, that truly leaves a lasting impression.

Jurassic 5 took to the main stage to finish the day off and blew the roof off Nozstock. With nothing but stars in the sky, lit up by the incredibly and well-deserved light show seen on stage, Jurassic 5 made their interpretation of The Hidden Valley come to life in front of thousands of people’s eyes. Huge vocals, deep beats. Sounds of all variations clashing together to bring different people together as one. Towards the end of their set they thanked the festival-goers for such an unforgettable moment. They greeted fans who had the pleasure of watching their performance with signing of foreheads to T-Shirts and everything in-between.

IMG_0971It is only after the main headline act had finished Jurassic
5 really brought the festival’s main aims together. They brought the crowd together. A secret gig kicked off, and where better to do a secret gig than Nozstock in The Hidden Valley. They showed that MC’ing isn’t just for the acts and that the crowd should be encouraged to come on stage and give it a go.

Maybe even the next Eminem was born over the weekend?

But iIMG_0846t’s the end of the secret gig that gets us. In times like this, where we see things happening the world, that we don’t want to see. It is a true inspiration what Jurassic 5 did. As a band they’re an inspiration to many and used their voices to motivate and enlighten people of their self worth. Akil made a speech emphasizing how important each and every person is. “If you find your self in life being told you are nothing and find that people don’t respect you,”, He said, “Then you wake up, look in a mirror and tell your self that you are somebody.”.

All in chant, ‘I AM… SOMEBODY!’. All together as one. Not a crowd and Jurassic 5. But a collection of, somebody’s.

If this isn’t what music is about, then we simply do not know.

Honourable citizens of Noz – we thank you for your presence!

Charlie Rimmer - crowd at Garden Stage

Friends, Romans, countrymen … time to kick off your gladiator sandals, hang up your togas, put your sword and shield in storage for the winter and have yourself a nice sit down. Pop the kettle on. Bribe your mates to fan you with leaves and feed you grapes. You deserve it. Because, Nozzers, you smashed it out of the blimmin’ park this year.

From the littl’uns wowing us all with their arty crafty creations in the Kids Area to the dedicated partytroopers keeping the neighbouring cows awake til the wee small hours, each and every one of you brought a certain je ne sais quoi to proceedings. Repeat offenders and brand-spanking-newbies all coming together as thousands of threads in the beautiful tapestry of Nozstock, if you will.

All of us here at NozHQ thought this year’s crowd was the most chilled, friendly and fun-hungry we’ve had in yonks – not to mention the Sun Dance shapes you were all pulling helped keep the rain at bay for the weekend. We make you earn your keep down here on the farm …

As ever, credit where credit is due to the acts who kept you on your feet and/or on the edge of your seat, as well as to the traders who kept the Nozstock army marching, fed and sharply attired, and to the hordes of volunteers who descended on the farm to keep it clean, safe and sparkly for you all to do your thang in.

If you’re looking to give us a little token of your appreciation for the weekend you’ve just had – or if your Nozstock wasn’t quite up to standard and you want to let us know – please have a click on our Nozstock 2016 feedback form. There’s £100 of Amazon vouchers up for grabs for one lucky entrant to sweeten the deal.

Keep an eye on our Facebook and Twitter over the coming weeks for photographic evidence of your time on the farm – to keep you going through those lonely winter nights when Nozstock 2016 begins to seem like a distant dream. Don’t worry folks, we’ll be back before you know it – see you in 2017…

Check out a few photo highlights right now.
