The Altered State

By day expect the unexpected – games, workshops, impromptu paint fights at The Sunken Yard – and by night party on with fire shows, disco tunes and madcap roaming performances. The Altered State is yours for the taking; come and make your mark…

2019 line-up includes…

LAUGHING STOCK

If good old fashioned wit and hilarity are your thing then this is the place for you. Staging a Saturday & Sunday evening takeover of the Department of Cultural Affairs, the Laughing Stock comedians will have you cackling your way into the stratosphere. Don’t break a rib. Seriously.

REGINALD D. HUNTER
“REGINALD D HUNTER JOINS THE TOP RANK OF STAND-UP COMEDIANS WORKING TODAY…A COMEDIAN GOING FOR BROKE, FLYING IN THE FACE OF RECEIVED OPINION IN A WAY THAT IS SIMPLY EXHILARATING……THIS IS COMEDY OF A RARE SCOPE” Times
“COMPELLING ONSTAGE CHARISMA. HE REMAINS A TOWERING PRESENCE IN ABSOLUTE CONTROL.” Evening Standard

Since his arrival in the UK Reginald D. Hunter‘s searingly honest observations both onstage and on TV have garnered him a cross-generational fan base. His TV appearances have included Have I Got News For You?, and two series of the BBC2’s hugely popular Reginald D Hunter’s Songs Of The South & Songs of The Border, documenting Reginald’s epic road trip through 150 years of American popular song. Reginald’s career in Comedy comes of age this year as he enters his twenty-first year of performing in the UK. During that time he has become one of the Comedy industry’s best-known performers for his distinctive take on the most diverse range of subjects. His work can be brutally honest and is often considered to be controversial but it is always meticulously thought out and he has never been afraid to face challenging issues head on even when the focus is on his own principles or beliefs.

PHIL KAY
Armed only with his broken guitar, his wit and an empty crisp packet, funnyman Phil Kay roams the open roads spinning yarns, singing songs, spouting gentle obscenities and generally making merry. He’s been hanging around causing mischief on the comedy circuit for almost thirty years, described by Fest Magazine as “tender, poignant and fitfully hilarious” and this summer he’s welcoming us all back onboard Planet Anecdote to be beguiled, bewildered and thoroughly tickled. Leave your common sense at the door and pull up a stool around the warm crackling fire that is Phil’s masterful combo of song, story and semi-derangement. After all, it wouldn’t be Nozstock without Phil…
PHIL NICHOL
Phil Nichol is a truly unique performer. An acclaimed actor, award winning comedian, writer and musician – there is no end to his talent! Phil is an energetic and exciting performer with an unquenchable thirst to break boundaries and innovate with his work. His skill as an improviser whether it be musical, comedy or straight is unparalleled. With a surreal edge to some of his mischievous rantings, Nichol always brings something new to the stage whilst his keen sense of fun and eye for the shocking and absurd has cemented his position as one of the best comedians on the circuit today. His assured and award winning performances in his theatrical work have attracted critical accolades and see him in great demand as an actor.
DANE BAPTISTE
Original, provocative and exceptionally prolific – Baptiste is being hailed as one of the most exciting acts to break in years. The London born stand up made comedy history in 2014 as the first black British act to be nominated for a Comedy Award at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. He had incredible success with his debut stand up show Citizen Dane, completing two sold out runs at London’s Soho Theatre. He has since written and starred in his own BBC sitcom series and made numerous other TV and radio appearances. His second stand up show Reasonable Doubts was met with sold out audiences and huge critical acclaim. He’s appeared on Live at the Apollo, Mock the Week and 8 out of 10 Cats Does Countdown.
ADAM BLOOM
Adam Bloom is one of Britain’s most inventive comedians. He has performed sell-out solo shows at Edinburgh Festivals as well as performing a sell-out tour of Britain. He has also sold out theatres at festivals in Melbourne, Sydney, Auckland, Wellington & Cape Town. In 2004 he played to 42,000 people in 17 cities across Canada. He has also written three series of ‘The Problem with Adam Bloom’ for BBC Radio 4.
JAYDE ADAMS
If you missed her in 2016, never fear – one of the best British comediennes Jayde Adams is returning to the Nozstock comedy stage to captain the good ship Laughter as MC for the weekend. You may recognise her from 8 Out Of 10 Cats, her sold-out Edinburgh Fringe shows or just from your wildest dreams: mixing music, social satire and characters into her sets, Jayde describes herself as a “comedian, dancer, opera singer, piano player, MC, beat boxer, photographer and octuple threat”.
SARAH CALLAGHAN
Sarah Callaghan is an award-winning comedian and writer who has taken the comedy scene by storm with her frank and fearless style. In 2014 she was named as ‘One to Watch’ by Time Out and in 2015 she took her critically-acclaimed debut show Elephant to the Edinburgh Fringe. Sarah was widely heralded as an exciting new comedic voice, a status cemented by her Malcolm Hardee Award nomination for ‘Act Most Likely To Earn A Million Quid’. Sarah has performed all over Europe. In 2018 she took ‘The Ballad of Sarah Callaghan’ to the New Zealand International Comedy Festival. She continues to take the circuit by storm.
PAUL SWEENEY
Lauded by fellow comedian Paul Foot as a ‘surreal tea caddy’, Paul Sweeney‘s musical musings, inimitable moustache and wit drier than a cream cracker sandwich at a picnic in the Sahara will have the Laughing Stock tent feel like a stick-up at a joke shop. Give him all your laughs and nobody gets hurt!
JOE DAVIES
Our Laughing Stock curator, Joe Davies‘ set is a mix of weird, silly, surreal and downright comical. His most recent show Who’s The Daddy focuses on Joe’s discovery that he is actually the son of Perrier-nominated country singer Hank Wangford. The show was an instant success at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival and cemented Joe’s reputation as a ‘glorious loon’ (John Kearns)

ARCH 62
Megan (with no h) is a down to earth kind of girl. The type of girl we’ve all had the pleasure to meet. After a drunken pushbike accident Megan is encouraged by her older brother to “speak to someone”. An unorthodox intervention for a girl who needs it. Following on from their debut at Nozstock in 2018, and talking honestly about growing up, throwing up, dying and lying, Arch 62 presents a post-modern show, getting the audience to question their morals, roles and self.
