Cheltenham Jazz Festival bring you a bank holiday to remember…

We’re getting a bit excited about Cheltenham Jazz Festival’s upcoming gigs at the end of this month so thought we ought to let you know what’s in store on the second bank holiday weekend.

Catch trip-hop duo Lamb at Cheltenham Town Hall on 30th; since their separation to focus on solo projects in 2004, we’ve missed Lamb’s unique sound, the mixture of Lou Rhodes’ mesmerizing voice with Andy Barlow’s experimental electro-acoustic jazzy sounds. Here is the chance to see them perform tracks from their highly anticipated new album ‘5’. We’ve got spine tingles just thinking about it.

Hot on their heels, at the Town Hall on May 1st Roots Manuva will be bounding in with his inspirational and honest take on British multi-culture, weaving  together a beautiful tapestry of dub, funk and grime into his deliciously original brand of hip hop. In support, Ninja Tune’s prodigy Bonobo will be mixing breaks with hip hop, soul folk with jazz to present a beautiful soundscape to get your lugs atrembling. This is a ridiculously good combination for some bank holiday joy so go on and treat yourself.

Toddla T to play Garden Stage…

Electronic heavyweight and Sheffield’s prince of bassline house Toddla T has confirmed he will be bringing his bleepy, clangy, jump-up ragga noise to Nozstock: The Hidden Valley’s Garden Stage this year. As Guardian writer Tony Naylor states, “Toddla’s stuff has serious pop nous, and doesn’t take itself too seriously. There’s a ready, very British sense of humour…” We agree that Toddla is successfully seeing off the stoic muso and love his experimental, bold steps into electronica. And he’s making some very good friends, including MCs such as Sorecee and Mr Versatile, and bassline heroes like Nastee Boi. With takes on the work of Jack Penate and Hot Chip, he truly is a remix king. So much, so soon. We can’t wait to stomp our way through this one.

Early birds sold out…

You know a bargain when you see it. Well done to those of you that got the early birds quick! Afraid they’ve all sold out now…. But the full price ticket is still a bargain for eight stages of magical entertainment. We’ll be releasing a killer dance line up for you very shortly… but those of you who are more into your bands, acoustics and ska bounces don’t despair… we have the two main stage headliners and full line ups to announce soon afterwards as well as raucous comedy, delightful and debauched performers, workshops, arts, crafts and round-the-clock entertainment for tots, big kids and everyone in between.

Cannot wait.

Creative Boom get sweet on small festivals

Creative Boom have been giving a little bit of love to small indie festivals with their article documenting the best 25 small independent festivals in the UK. As Katy Cowan, journalist at Creative… stated, “If you’re a bit like me and you still reminisce about the ‘good old days’ when Glastonbury wasn’t so huge and you’d prefer something a little more intimate and less commercial, then there are so many alternatives out there.” We’re really chuffed that they’ve recognised the power of the indie event and that small festivals like Nozstock can offer a huge experience and an array of wild entertainments that are totally homegrown and original.

Example Magazine’s take on the 2010 experience

Mancunian scenesters’ magazine, Example, enjoyed their visit to Nozstock last year and writer James really got to grips with the intimate grassroots environment, citing his enjoyment of “a number of smaller stages tucked into corners around the site. With some amazing small bands and musicians playing.  You know the sort of hidden gems that make you stop in your tracks as you wander aimlessly through festivals and take a moment to actually appreciate a guy who can really play guitar…”

James also took some stunning images of the festival in full flow, which you can see in our gallery and on Example’s site. Enjoy.
